Understanding Competency-Based Curriculum

Gain an understanding of the differences between standards, outcomes, and competencies and the skills to integrated into them into your curriculum.  The course takes you from  using the principles of Deeper Learning to begin development of your plan all the way through using Understanding by Design out line your entire unit. 

During this course you will build  

  • A revised competency-based unit plan using the principles of Deeper Learning,
  • An analysis of an existing lesson plan for standards, outcomes and competencies  
  • One learning outcome that is mapped to standards and competencies
  • Student reflections on competency-based education 
  • An outline of the knowledge and skills that align to your targeted competencies 
  • A unit plan outline using UbD

The wording of the instruction was confusing with the instruction from the instructors.. However, I did learn some great information for narrowing the skills to teach within a standard so that was GREAT!

Part 1 was very confusing as terms not only differ among the teaching profession, but they differed within the instructor's videos from this course. Vocab terms being used and defined inconsistently made quizzes difficult.

Great class on curriculum for Competency based instruction. The videos went well with the challenges. I would recommend this course to anyone that is switching their teaching styles or wanting more information on strategies out there to completely overhaul what you are already doing.

Lots of fantastic information that was easy to follow. The practice milestone is highly recommended before the milestone - very helpful. Also, if you're familiar with the topics, don't feel like you need to watch all the videos. A lot of the info is repetitive from other courses. Took me just under 6 hours to complete the entire course.

It was difficult to use the transcript because it is not as well developed as the power point is. Needing to take large quantities of paper notes seemed to counteract the idea of an online course. I had a very difficult time organizing the ideas and studying. It is excellent information, but I know the concepts will stay more than the terminology

Great content, but a lot of ambiguity, typos in questions, and lack of clarity to differentiate between different vocabulary that is being used. Some of the questions in challenges and milestones had answers that I didn't feel matched with the information from the tutorials
